New Orleans Mayor Vows to Punish Christians

The Mask of Hypocrisy

When Christian worship leader and political activist Sean Feucht showed up at Jackson Square Saturday, November 7, 2020, along with Christian recording artist Lauren Daigle to stage a public protest, Mayor LaToya Cantrell went bananas. The protest was in response to the illegal shutdown and unconstitutional actions of politicians ordering churches to cease church services or risk being fined and arrested. The protest has traveled to over 46 cities with upwards of 15 thousand protesters shouting “Let Us Worship!” Roughly 2,500 Christian protesters appeared in front of Jackson Square to protest the shutdowns by doing what they were forbidden to do, sing and worship God.

Cantrell was angered and vowed to punish the organizers while she read a Bible verse during her press conference in an effort to shame the Christians for gathering and disobeying her orders:

Romans 13:1: “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.”

Unfortunately, someone should have reviewed her sermon notes and pointed out that Christians are commanded in the Bible to assemble and worship God (Hebrews 10:25) and that no governing authority can or should try to prevent that Unalienable Right found both in the Bible (Acts 4:18-22) and the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

In Biblical context, Christians are instructed to submit to the governing authorities, but never in unlimited, unconditional, and absolute obedience.  Whenever a government official demands that Christians cannot meet at their place of worship to sing and worship their creator, pray for divine intervention and healing, and proclaim the message of God’s love for the lost, Christians will obey God rather than man. Cantrell is not the first politician to threaten Christians with punishment. Politicians have been persecuting Christians for thousands of years. America was founded to escape religious persecution and the founding fathers made certain that such an Unalienable Right was stated in our Constitution:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. (1st Amendment)

There is no law that authorizes any politician to forbid Christians to peacefully gather and worship God and Mayor Cantrell is operating outside of her authority by threatening to punish Christians for doing so. Christians do not need the Mayor’s approval to worship God.

When Antifa and BLM showed up in New Orleans to protest a few months ago, they blocked the Interstate and other streets and fought with police while Cantrell rushed to the podium to express her full support for the unruly riotous mob—”we will stand with our protestors in solidarity,” she announced while making an appeal for no more violence. But as for these peaceful Christian protesters—they shall be punished. It’s a mask of hypocrisy that is more contagious than COVID-19.

So what is the Mayor’s message? The anarchist protesters that burned, looted, murdered, and rioted in many major cities are welcome in New Orleans to protest and do what they do. But when the Christians peacefully protest the illegal and unlawful closer of their churches by gathering to worship God, she condemns them and threatens them with punishment.

What an embarrassment and disgrace she has become.

When you use Headlines like this, you are no better than CNN, MSNBC OR ANY OTHER AGENCY THAT SLANTS THE TRUTH TO FULFILL YOUR OWN MISSION.

You are not wrong but then again you purposely misconstrued the truth to inflame opinion. Shame on you.

We have to be above reproach.

Although I cannot fully agree with your comments, I do appreciate your feedback.

Unfortunately, your comments are inconsistent with the well-established facts. There is no slanting or misconstruing of the truth, and there is nothing reproachable about this article. However, I fully agree with your comment where you wrote, “You are not wrong” which contradicts the whole of your criticism.

In the parable of the lost sheep, the shepherd left the 99 to save one sheep. Imagine, it was ONLY ONE PERCENT!!!! That is the attitude that some Christians appear to have about the people who suffer and die of severe Covid. This disease is spread exponentially. People who are asymptomatic may never know who they passed it on to and who may have died. The loved ones of those who died may never know the source of the infection. It’s presumption, not faith, to put God to the test by not doing what you can do, and expecting God to make up for your lack of compassion while exercising your “rights.” He said, where ever TWO or more are gathered in his name, He is there in the midst. There are safer ways to obey scripture than mass gatherings that not only defy the civil authorities, but also break the commandment to love our neighbors.
